Special Mission Alert

ALR/PG Family Member James "Jim" Boyles

Services Thursday, July 12, 2007

This is the tentative "Ride Plan" for the Patriot Guard mission in support of the funeral of CSM James (Jim) Boyles, USA, (Ret).  At the time of retirement from active duty, Jim was serving as Command Sergeant Major of the 937th Engineer Group, Fort Riley, Kansas.  Jim had been having heart and lung problems that developed into pneumonia.  He passed away at the hospital in Topeka, Kansas on the evening of 28 June 2007.  Jim's funeral is now scheduled for 1000 hrs 12 July 2007 at the Mass-Hinnitt Chapel in Junction City (see below for tentative schedule. His wife Kathi has asked for Patriot Guard support and involvement.

The Patriot Guard will provide support as requested by Kathi and the family.  The Patriot Guard will assemble at the staging area (see specific instructions below), move as a group to the Mass-Hinnitt Chapel, provide an Avenue of Flags, and then upon complexion of funeral service, provide escort to he cemetery located at Fort Riley.  Flags will be reissued at the cemetery and the Patriot Guard will establish a "flag line" (Avenue of Flags) at the gravesite. At completion of the graveside service the flags will be returned to the truck and the group will then exit though the same gate we entered the installation through.  The exit will also be in a group formation.  Once we exit the gate everyone will then "break from the group" and be responsible for honoring all traffic signs and regulations as individual riders.

Tentative ride plan:

the ground to assist with parking).

escorted to the Fort Riley Main Post Cemetery---Note: A 5

One 3'x5' US flag will flown by the right front bike in the

"Missing Man Formation".  All other bikes in the "Missing

Man formation will not fly a flag.  People riding in those

                            positions have been identified.

pick up a 3'x5' flag that is mounted on a 10' staff (pole).

                            line-up at the cemetery.

After completion of the ceremony at the cemetery all motorcycles will depart as a group and exit the "Main Post Gate" (the same gate we use to enter the installation).

Note: Once a bike has been given a "go" at the initial line-up, they will then be given instructions on where to line up for the move to Mass-Hinett Chapel.  Everyone is ask to remain in that position for the remainder of the mission.  Bikes will be lined up in accordance with "Proper Flag Etiquette" (Large US Flag in lead, then Service Flags, etc.)

Each bike will be issued a sign or windshield sticker (to be determined by ISO) which will identify that bike as having met all requirements for traveling through the gate to the cemetery.  Once the ceremony at the cemetery is completed all bikes will depart the installation as a group and exit the same gate they enter.

Proper riding apparel will be required for riding on the Fort Riley installation.

Current requirements are DOT Approved Helmet, Proper Eye Protection, Bright Colored Long Sleeve Shirt, Full Fingered Gloves, Long Trousers, and Over The Ankle Boots ("T" Shoes not acceptable)

Current Registration, Insurance, and a Motorcycle Inducement on a Valid Drivers License

The above items will be inspected prior to your joining the "escort formation" at the staging area.

PS: I encourage everyone who can work it into their schedule to be there and support this mission "if at all possible".  Jim's wife, Kathi works at Junction City Harley Davidson Dealership and I am sure we all remember her by her smile.  Jim was also an active member of the Junction City Harley Owner's Group.
