Douglas C. Smith
29 January 1947 - 23
August 2006
Marines, Friends and Family .... First, I
can't help but attaching a picture to this email. I want you to remember Doug
as I remember him. He was looking right at me when I took this picture. I'd
say he loved me pretty much, don't you think? For that I'm grateful.
RaShel and I have made the funeral
arrangements. Doug had it already taken care. We just made it happen. We
don't think you will see an obituary in the KC Star until Tuesday or probably
Wednesday of next week. Doug's cremated remains will be interned at Fort
Leavenworth's Army cemetery on the base next Thursday, 31 August at 1330. If
this should change, I will notify you. We are trying to accommodate family
members coming in from out-of-town.
Doug will have a full military honors burial
and detail present. The Army Chaplian will conduct the services. The funeral
honor detail will be Marine Corps. That has been arranged already. I plan to
give an eulogy, and invite any of you the same opportunity.
There will be no prior visitation. All will
be done at the gravesite. After the service, his ashes will be be moved to
his final resting place in the cemetery. He will be buried where his father,
an Air Force Major, and mother, along with his brother Timothy, who also is a
Marine Sergeant of Vietnam. This is what Doug wanted.
Mt Moriah Funeral Home on 10507 Holmes Rd,
KCMO 64131 are handling the arrangements. I don't know how flowers will be
handled if you wished to send them. As we are picking up his remains and
carrying them to Ft Leavenworth ourselves. You may call the funeral home at
816-942-2004 and ask. Otherwise RaShel Adams' address is 17647 W 111th Place,
Olathe KS 66061
I'm currently working on a gathering place
where we can have drink and food, and tell tall war stories about Doug. I
will let you what those arrangements will be once they have been finalized.
Food dishes will be most welcomed.
Thank you for your calls and emails. They
are very appreciated.
